What makes a good missed-call text

  • Send it fast. Within a minute, while they're still looking at their phone.
  • Say who you are. Your business name in the first few words, so it doesn't look like spam.
  • Ask one easy question. Something they can answer in a few words, like what the problem is.
  • Include "Reply STOP to opt out" in the first text, and stop texting anyone who asks.
  • Keep it under 160 characters when you can, so it arrives as one message.
FAQ

Questions about missed-call texts

Is it legal to text back someone who called my business?

Texting back a person who just called you, about what they called for, is common. Business texting still has rules: say who you are, include a way to opt out like "Reply STOP to opt out", stop right away when someone asks, and keep it to what they called about. In the US, carriers also require business numbers to be registered for texting (called A2P 10DLC). This is general information, not legal advice.

How fast should the text go out?

As fast as you can. A text that shows up while they're still holding their phone often gets a reply before they call anyone else. That's hard to do by hand when you're on a job, which is why most shops send it automatically.

How long should a missed-call text be?

Short. A text up to 160 characters goes as one message. Longer texts, or ones with emoji, are split into parts, which can arrive out of order on some phones and cost more to send. Each template on this page shows its length.

Should the text say why I missed the call?

A few words help, like "we're on a job". It tells the customer you're busy working, not ignoring them. Then ask one simple question so they can reply in a few seconds.

Can these texts be sent automatically?

CallsIn sends the first one for you within seconds of a missed call, from your own business name, and keeps the conversation going until the job is booked. You can also copy these and send them by hand.
