How many calls do plumbers miss? (And what each one costs)

About 1 in 4 calls to home service businesses goes unanswered, and almost nobody leaves a voicemail. Here is what that costs a plumbing business.

If you run a plumbing business, you already know the problem. The phone rings while you're under a sink, on a ladder or driving to the next job. You can't pick up. By the time you call back, the customer has already booked someone else.

So how often does this actually happen, and what does it cost? Here's what the data says.

The numbers

  • About 27% of calls to home service businesses aren't answered. That's from Invoca's research on home services. Roughly 1 in 4 calls.
  • Fewer than 3% of callers who hit voicemail leave a message. Also from Invoca's platform data. So voicemail doesn't save the lead. The other 97% just hang up.
  • 69% of missed business calls don't get a callback within 48 hours. That's from a study of 16.7 million missed business calls (August 2026). Only 31% get called back at all.
  • Hiring a plumber costs $341 on average, with most jobs between $182 and $501, according to HomeAdvisor's cost guide (updated June 2026).

Put those together and the picture is pretty clear. A missed call is usually a lost job, not a delayed one.

Why plumbers get hit harder

Most of the reasons you miss calls are part of the job itself:

  • Your hands are busy. You can't answer with a wrench in one hand and a pipe in the other.
  • Emergencies don't wait. Someone with a burst pipe or a leaking water heater isn't going to sit around for a callback. They call the next plumber on Google.
  • Calls come after hours. Leaks happen at night and on weekends, when the office isn't open.
  • Small crews. If it's you and one or two techs, there's nobody back at the shop to answer.

What missed calls cost a plumbing business

Here's a simple example. The 27% and $341 come from the sources above. The other two numbers are made up for the example, so swap in your own.

StepNumber
Calls a week (example)25
Calls a month (25 x 4.33 weeks)108
Missed, at 27%29
Missed calls that were real jobs (example: 4 in 10)12
Average plumbing job$341
Lost work per monthabout $4,000

Some of those 29 calls are spam, wrong numbers or people who call back. That's why the example only counts 4 in 10 as real jobs. Even so, it adds up to around $48,000 a year in work that went to someone else.

How to stop losing those calls

There's no single right answer. It depends on your budget and how many calls you get. Here are the usual options:

  1. Answer more yourself. Free, but it means stopping work, and it doesn't help at night.
  2. Hire someone for the office. The best experience for callers, but it's a full salary and still only covers office hours.
  3. A live answering service. Real people take messages around the clock. Usually priced per minute or per call, so it gets expensive when you're busy.
  4. Missed-call text-back. When you can't answer, the caller gets a text from your business within seconds. Most people would rather text than wait on hold, and it keeps them from calling the next plumber.
  5. An AI receptionist. Answers the call, asks what the problem is, books the job on your calendar and sends you a summary. Good for after hours and busy days.

Whatever you pick, the main thing is speed. The customer with a leak is going to book whoever gets back to them first.

Where CallsIn fits

I built CallsIn because this problem seemed so fixable. You keep your number and forward the calls you can't pick up. Every missed caller gets a text back in seconds, and on higher plans an AI receptionist can answer, book the job and send you a summary. It starts at $49 a month, and you can try it free for 14 days with no card.

Even if you don't use CallsIn, do something about missed calls. At around $341 a job, it doesn't take many saved calls to pay for any of the options above.
